Based on a true story and novel of the same name, in The Dig (2021), a 1930’s wealthy landowner hires an archaeologist to investigate her property, discovering some interesting finds as well as developing an unlikely relationship. Directed by Simon Stone, the film stars Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn and Ben Chaplin. YouTubers MileZee Movies and Kendall from the channel The Mother Flickers share their opposing views on the historical drama now streaming on Netflix.
Firstly, it’s too long for what the movie is. It’s a British drama that you would expect to find as a BBC drama. It goes on and on and on and on with little to basically grasp on to. The characters feel very shallow, not any real details to dive into in terms of character motivation or any little details.
There are too many characters with very surface level character development, says MileZee Movies, who also finds it distracting that some of the main characters are also introduced fairly late into the film making it feel like you are watching two different films as the focus of characters shift to the newly introduced cast.
YouTuber Kendall feels the complete opposite and believe the chemistry between Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes character is what makes much of the film so intriguing. A great performance from Fiennes, according to the YouTuber who say it's obviously he becomes very invested in his character and the budding relationship.
The acting is fucking fantastic. Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan are so perfect in this movie. I would dare say Oscar worthy. They have such great chemistry together. If you’re not in tuned to British people speaking, watch this movie with subtitles because they really do have some pretty thick British accents in this movie.
However, he does note the introduction of Lily James later on in the film as a main character does throw off the pacing of the film making it lose focus on an already excellent storyline. Her character storyline was inconsequential and if it had been left out of the movie, the film would still be just as enjoyable, says the YouTuber.
When the movie focuses on Carey Mulligan as well as Ralph Fiennes and their relationship together, the movie is firing on all cylinders, it’s absolutely fantastic. But then once Lily James comes into the picture … I feel like her story drugged the movie down. It was up until then the movie was really rolling along … then she comes into the picture and it feels like Simon Stone just through her in there because he felt like he needed another storyline to pat out the run time.
Ultimately the most interesting part of the film for YouTuber MileZee Movies is the time period in which it takes place. The details and visuals depicting World War II moments are more interesting than the actual film plot, according to the YouTuber.
The time period for me is the most interesting part. There’s moments where they’re having to black out the windows and everything like that and there’s a moment where we see a crashed spitfire. There’s just some great World War II moments in the movie that I found more interesting than the plot itself.
