The Ruby Tuesday Reviews Uncle Frank

In Uncle Frank (2020), Frank, a gay literature professor travels back home to South Carolina with his niece Beth to attend a family funeral and confront his past. Directed by Alan Ball, the film stars Paul Bettany as Frank, Sophia Lillis as Beth, Judy Greer, Steve Zahn, and Peter Macdissi. The film made its debut at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and is now available on Amazon Prime. YouTuber Ruben from The Ruby Tuesday, shares his thoughts on film.

I really enjoyed the journey, I loved the performances, I loved the way it looks. I just think it’s a little bit light on depth, it’s a little bit light on dialogue, but for the most part, I thought it was really well put together.

Though the film stars a fantastic cast with outstanding performances, the YouTuber wishes some of the supporting characters are more flushed out and given more to explore into. Specifically, the character of Beth and how seems to be so in love with life and yet at the same time seems to have experienced so little of it outside of her bubble until her uncle comes along and opens up her eyes to more of the world.

The performance from Paul Bettany and Peter Macdissi as a gay couple is believable and translates authentically as a happy old married couple, according to the YouTuber, who notes the director inserts some of his own personal experiences into the film making it all the more emotionally charged.

A great film that really sets the tone of what’s happening, says the YouTuber who rates the film a B+.
