Wakanda Forever! After much anticipation and dodging spoilers online, YouTuber Storm Akima and her family watch and react to Black Panther (2018) for the first time. T’Challa returns home to Wakanda after the death of his father in order to take his place as king and become the Black Panther, when his legitimacy is questioned when another of royal blood challenges his throne, his people and his way of life. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the movie stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Daniel Kaluuya and Forest Whitaker. Excited to dive into the film, Storm Akima and her family share their thoughts on the long-awaited Marvel movie.
I really enjoyed this movie. The humor is awesome, the characters were awesome. So freaking beautiful, the landscapes and everything, the city was amazing.
One aspect the whole family is taken back by is the visuals of Wakanda. They are in awe of the scenery and the beauty of the land painted by the filmmakers; everything from the technological advancements of the city as well as the natural beauty of the landscape.
Throughout the entire film, much of the action scenes left the YouTuber and her family sitting on the edge of their seats. During the epic duel between T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), everyone looks extremely stressed, anxious and at some points had their hands up above their heads or covering their faces, worried about what is going to come next for the superhero. There are definitely moments of “Oh my god!” and “Oh no!”
In the end, the whole family really enjoys the film. Especially the female characters. Talk about girl power and female empowerment. They really become attached to Shuri (Letitia Wright) and praise her for her intelligence, grace and humorous character moments. The YouTuber and her family note Killmonger probably would not have been successful in taking over the throne without the knowledge and expertise from Shuri, who is the creator of most of the technological advancements in Wakanda. They even refer to her as the next Tony Stark.
I really don’t think that Killmonger would have done well without her.
The other female character who impresses them is Okoye (Danai Gurira). She is a strong warrior who defends what is right and knows how to kick butt, according to the YouTuber and her family.
I love that great warrior lady, the general.
Storm Akima is actually surprised when Killmonger ends up also having a Black Panther suit with the same powers as T’Challa. She notes that before watching, she had seen trailers of the movie and just thought the character also had a different suit with different powers, not knowing that in the end, it would be a difficult battle between two characters possessing the same powers.
I didn’t know because I saw in the trailers before with Killmonger, I thought that he just got a suit somehow … I didn’t think he’d have the same powers as T’Challa, so I thought that was crazy.
Another aspect of the film the YouTuber finds interesting is during the transformation Black Panther takes before actually inheriting his powers from the ancestors. When he meditates and goes into the other realm to communicate with the Black Panthers who have come before him, Storm Akima compares the concept to the Avatar movie: The Last Airbender (2010), when the Avatar is able to communicate with his past lives by going into another realm.
I thought it was interesting how the Black Panther would go between realms and be able to talk to the other Black Panthers and it reminded me a lot of Avatar The Last Airbender where the Avatar could talk to past lives … I kind of saw a cool relation there.
After having so much fun watching Black Panther, YouTuber Storm Akima and her family are excited to continue on and eventually watch the other MCU films.
