YouTuber Ranks Iron Man Trilogy

“You can take away my house, all my tricks and toys. One thing you can’t take away – I am Iron Man.” The Iron Man trilogy was the first film to kick off the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise. Grossing over $500 million in the box office, Iron Man (2008) was directed by Jon Favreau and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark aka Iron Man. In Iron Man, Billionaire and genius inventor Tony Stark builds an armored combat suit to fight crime and terrorism. Two years later Iron Man 2 (2010) is released and in 2013, Iron Man 3 (2013) returns with new director Shane Black. YouTuber and MCU fan Sean Chandler from his channel Sean Chandler Talks About, shares his ranking of the Iron Man movies.

If you could have just cut a couple of these plots out or maybe it really did just need an additional year for Jon Favreau to work with the team to develop the script and just tighten it up make those pieces flow together a little bit better because what we got had some great moments but it was moments rather than the whole kind of coming together.

Coming in third place is Iron Man 2, says Chandler, who although still adores the film, finds the multiple subplots throughout make it way too messy and too much to follow. He notes that even before production on the film, executive producers only allotted two years for director Jon Favreau to create and write the concept of the second film after its massive hit in the box offices.

It ends up being kind of a jumbled mess, says Chandler. Despite the small flaw in his movie opinion, the YouTuber notes the film still has great action sequences, still perfectly highlights the charming and charismatic characteristics of Tony Stark and is still a fun watch.

In second place with Iron Man 3, the YouTuber really enjoys the portrayal and growth of Tony Stark’s character arc.

The arc that they give Tony and his fear after the events of the Avengers I think that’s great. This idea of kind of stripping him of his armor for a little bit, he’s kind of on his own.

Iron Man 3 really showcases Iron Man’s character development throughout the film as he is mostly without his suit and focuses on who Tony Stark is without all the glitz and glamour of the Iron Man façade. However, Chandler does feel the film is a typical Shane Black film with typical “Shane Black tropes” in that it is trying to be too clever. The plot twists and turns that are typical to Shane Black directed movies are purposefully trying to subvert expectations of the film and didn’t stay true to the “Iron Man story.”

Really my biggest criticism is that twists, it just felt like you were building us up for something that was interesting in one sort of way and then he gave us something else. In which case I felt cheated out of a thing I thought was going to be really cool and then it gave me something that was cool but we’d already seen in the movie.

Talking the number one top spot is the first Iron Man movie! The film that kicked off the MCU superhero movie franchise. The film that really set the standard for defining what is considered a true cinematic movie. The film that surprised everyone.

It is such a fun and fresh movie that created a template for all future MCU movies for the last 10 years, says Chandler, who like most people at the time, was skeptical and ended up pleasantly surprised by how much he loved the film.

You’re doing an Iron Man movie with a washed up actor that’s a convict, and you’re getting Jon Favreau, the guy that did Elf to do this? This doesn’t seem like a good plan right here, and then we were so wrong.

He especially finds the movie plot of Tony Stark’s redemption arc parallels well with Robert Downey Jr.’s personal redemption arc. At the time, Robert Downey Jr. had previously been in rehab and burned so many bridges in Hollywood; so, this was his come back story just as much as it was Tony Stark’s, according to the YouTuber.

A great cast with great chemistry to help kick off and set the tone for all future comic book movies, says Chandler of the first Iron Man film.

Every single time I watched the Jarvis test sequence where he’s like flipping all around and Jarvis is the arm thing … it’s so funny 10 years later … this movie is just wonderful. I love this movie and what they did with it.
