The prom; a high school rite of passage. In The Prom (2020), a group of Broadway stars stir up change in a small town when they rally to support a teen who is banned from bringing her girlfriend to the prom. Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, the film was directed by Ryan Murphy and stars Jo Ellen Pellman, Ariana DeBose, Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Andrew Rannells, James Corden, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kerry Washington just to name a few. YouTuber Perri Nemiroff shares her thoughts on the Netflix musical.
I was often mesmerized by the lighting design and the choreography but the other thing that I really did appreciate about the visuals in the prom is that they do seem to know exactly when to tone it down and that stark contrast really winds up upping the emotion of a few very pivotal dramatic beats.
It really feels like a Ryan Murphy project, says the YouTuber who notes the bright colors, vibrant energy and “all around good vibes” of the film is every bit of entertaining as it sounds.
When it comes to the performance, the YouTuber feels it is one of her most favorite performances from James Corden and is the most pleasantly surprised by Keegan-Michael Key’s performance. As for our two main characters played by Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana DeBose, they have such amazing screen presence and poise, according to Nemiroff, who is looking forward to seeing more from these young actors.
