In Spell (2020), an unexpected storm causes Marquis and his family to lose control of the plane they are flying and he awakens to find himself trapped in the attic of Ms. Eloise who claims to be nursing him back to help but seems to have a much more sinister plan for Marquis and his family. Directed by Mark Tonderai, the film stars Omari Hardwick as Marquis and Loretta Devine as Ms. Eloise. YouTuber Sharronda Williams from her channel Pay or Wait shares her thoughts on the horror/thriller.
The writing is what I have issues with when it comes to Spell. If you’re introducing something like hoodoo, which is something that a lot of people probably won’t know about while they’re watching this film, I think it’s fair to try to explain some things.
Like many films lately, the YouTubers biggest gripe with Spell is the writing. What is hoodoo? Why is Ms. Eloise using hoodoo? She feels the film fails at creating any sort of explanation or character building for Ms. Eloise to learn who she is, so as the audience, we are able to understand her motivations for her actions. By the third act, it is too rushed and we are still left with unanswered questions about these characters, says Williams.
The performances were great, and there was genuine intensity all throughout the film, really latching on to the suspense and thriller genre, says the YouTuber. But, in the end, the film still leaves her wanting more.
