Sylvie’s Love Takes YouTuber back to 1950’s Romance

Now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Sylvie’s Love (2020) centers around Sylvie, who finds a summer romance with saxophonist Robert and then withstanding the test of time, finds their feelings for each other have not changed even when they reconnect years later. The film made its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It is directed by Eugene Ashe and stars Tessa Thompson as Sylvie and Nnamdi Asomugha as Robert. YouTuber Sharronda Williams from the channel Pay Or Wait, shares her thoughts on the love story.

I love that we get to focus on just what makes them human and not their suffering. Really just the love that they have, their career aspirations as we see both of these characters kind of navigate through life as some crazy things are thrown their way. As they fall in and out of love, as circumstances kind of push them together or apart at times.

It feels like a very real love story, according to the YouTuber who notes not all love stories have happy endings, and sometimes relationships have bad timing and have too many obstacles in their way. She appreciates the more realistic approach to this love story.

Another aspect Williams very much enjoys is the performance by Tessa Thompson and how the film portrays her character as a strong black woman in a time period where women in general were only starting to find their voice and power. The film does a great job highlighting women in power and women in leadership roles, says Williams.
