Movies And Munchies Reviews The Great Heist

The Great Heist (El Robo del Siglo) (2020), a Netflix limited series crime drama thriller, centers around the robbery of Colombia’s central bank where the thieves made off with $33 million. Based on the true events of 1994, the six episode show stars Andres Parra, Christian Tappán, Marcela Benjumea and Paula Castaño. YouTuber Chris from the channel Movies And Munchies shares his thoughts on the bank heist series.

The whole show has a little bit of whimsy or kookiness in its presentation and at times some of it feels just a little bit silly. That feeling comes not only from the dialogue and that characters but also the cinematography and the editing styles that they choose.

An overall entertaining show, Chris feels there are some scenes where the show is trying to be almost humorous and lighthearted, which takes away from the premise and reality of the situations. He goes on to compare the show to another Netflix bank heist show, Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) (2017), in that they both have a similar take with character code names and an elaborate plan to rob the bank.

One aspect the YouTuber finds very interesting is the blunt portrayal of societal corruption. It was something he doesn’t expect to be so outright. Is this a criticism on our understanding of class and power?

Something I found really interesting is the level of corruption that the show portrayed. If you want to break the law all you need is some cash and any will basically let you get away with anything. And I know that happens everywhere but it was the overtness and the openness at which it was happening that was really intriguing to me.

A quick and fun watch if you’re a fan of Money Heist, says Chris, who gives the show a 3.5/5 rating. The series is now streaming on Netflix.
