In Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), space adventurer Peter Quill teams up with a bunch of misfits in order to keep evil villain Ronan from possessing a rare and powerful orb that could lead to the destruction of the universe. Directed by James Gunn, the film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Michael Rooker. YouTuber Mary from her channel Mary Cherry, is quite new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is watching Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time. Having little to any knowledge about the film, she is excited to see a familiar name as one of the characters, Chris Pratt.
Such a different vibe from everything else I’ve seen so far in the marvel cinematic universe but loving it so far.
Immediately from the beginning, the YouTuber notices a different tone this film sets compared to the other films she’s seen from the MCU. It has a much more comedic vibe with not only one liners but great comedic timing from the character performances, like when Chris Pratt is punching out a bunch of bad dudes all while listening and dancing to a killer 90’s mixtape soundtrack. When it comes down to the music, throughout the entire film, she notes how much she is loving the music and often sings out loud when she recognizes the popular 80’s and 90’s hits.
Peter has great tastes in music.
At first she doesn’t put two and two together to realize that Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) was the kid in the beginning of the film during a very emotional scene when he loses his mother to cancer. The more that is revealed about Peter, the more invested she becomes into his character.
I can’t believe that little kid in the beginning grew up in outer space. He ended up growing up and never coming home.
Mary also notices how much of the movie reminds her of another famous space film, the Star Wars franchise. A fan of Star Wars, the YouTuber enjoys the scenes of the characters hopping to different planets and seeing the uniqueness of each place they visit.
I’m actually loving the fact that they’re going to different planets because it reminds me of Star Wars.
Every time she sees different scenes with the shots of the galaxy or a pan of different planets, she is in awe at the grandness and picturesque visuals painted by the film’s cinematography.
It was beautifully shot. I loved all of the galaxy scenes. I absolutely fell in love with the gradients.
Another stand out in the film for the YouTuber is the performance by Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star Lord. She recognizes him from his previous work at the show Parks and Recreation (2009) and really enjoys how he cleverly inserts his comedic roots all while playing a dramatic action role of a superhero. This is especially apparent in the scene where Peter goes to rescue Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and when they are safely back inside the ship, the anticipation of him confessing his love for Gamora after almost losing her turns into more of a confession of being a bit narcissistic in complementing his own heroic acts.
Oh my god. Why is he like this? I was about to cry and then he just made me laugh instead.
In a different scene where Peter is seen dancing about in front of Ronan, the YouTuber is confused because Ronan is seconds away from destroying the universe and the so called super hero is pretending to compete in a dance off with the evil villain?
What the hell. Oh my god dance off are you serious? This isn’t footloose.”
In the end, the film is not at all what the YouTuber expects for an MCU superhero film and she is completely blow away by how much she enjoys it.
I fucking loved that movie … I’m going to say that this was my favorite movie out of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. And I know that I freaking love The Avengers and I still do … when I was watching Guardians of the Galaxy I felt like it was in the Star Wars Universe even though obviously it’s not, but it just brought me back and that nostalgic feeling was just lovely.
