In the eight-episode true crime series, The Serpent (2021) tells the story of Charles Sobhraj and how he went on committing crimes across Asia in the mid 1970’s and became one of Interpol’s most wanted man. The series stars Tahar Rahim as the notorious Charles Sobhraj, Jenna Coleman, Billy Howel, Fabien Frankel, Ellie Bamber and Amesh Edireweera. YouTuber Shawn Jackson from the channel Lost In The Reel, shares his thoughts on the thrilling crime series.
As a viewer it’s so hard to take your eyes off of him because he is just such a fascinatingly awful character.
The biggest appeals of the series is the stellar performance from Tahar Rahim, who plays the menacing criminal and murderer, according to the YouTuber. The man uses everything in his acting arsenal to create this character that just makes your skin crawl, says Jackson. Definitely a chilling performance.
One aspect of the series the YouTuber does think falters in terms of storytelling technique is the usage of flashbacks. The time jumping back and forth resulted in “a bit of a fail” and Jackson would rather have seen a more linear timeline to the story.
Its approach to storytelling techniques … in The Serpent we jump back and forth through time so frequently and to so many different periods of time that you honestly get whiplash.
