Kristen Maldonado Reviews The Baby-Sitters Club

Netflix is back with another nostalgic tv series reboot, The Baby-Sitters Club (2020). Based on a book novel series of the same name from author Ann M. Martin, the show follows the adventures of a group of best friends as they launch their babysitting business. The show was created by Rachel Shukert and stars Shay Rudolph as Stacey, Momona Tamada as Claudia, Sophie Grace as Kristy, Malia Baker as Mary Anne, and Xochitl Gomez as Dawn. YouTuber Kristen Maldonado shares her thoughts on the classic remake.

Wow they really did such justice in bringing this nostalgic franchise that we’ve all grew up with to life.

Having grown up with The Baby-Sitters Club series, Maldonado is very impressed by Netflix’s fresh new take on the series citing the shows effective usage of nostalgic elements true to the original series from the 90’s as well as its incorporation of elements of present-day pop culture and themes. It's something old fans and a new generation of fans can enjoy.

I was also particularly impressed with their decision to be more inclusive with their casting choices and kind of go outside the box a little bit. They went with more diverse casting choices for Dawn and Mary Anne, which I really appreciated and I think really worked well with the story.

In the current climate of bringing more diversity to the screen, Netflix does a great job in showcasing a more diverse cast and having a more accurate portrayal of modern society, according to Maldonado who agrees with the choices of more black and Latinx representation in entertainment media.

All in all, the YouTuber feels this series comes at just the right time and presents themes that not only hold true to The Baby-Sitters Club world, but are also relatable to our current culture and climate.

The world of the babysitters club has always been very inclusive and diverse. As well as feminist promoting female empowerment, entrepreneurialism, female friendships. These values are what make it such a win to adapt today because it feels very true to The Baby-Sitters Club to push boundaries.
