Mulan 2020 is now available on the Disney+ streaming service for anxious fans of the Disney classic. The live action retelling of Mulan stars Yifei Liu as Mulan, and other notable actors such as Donnie Yen, Jet Li and Tzi Ma. The film directed by Niki Caro tells the tale of a young woman who disguises herself as a man to join the imperial army in hopes of bringing honor to her family. YouTuber John Campea shares his thoughts on the latest Disney release.
Could they have done more … yes, I think there was room for more because the moment they start talking about chi … that opens the door … you could have done a lot more with it.
It’s a nicely done film, the performances are great and feel very fairytale-like, but the film could have been elevated more, according to the YouTuber. He gives examples of missed opportunities of creating a grander experience in connecting with Mulan when they begin to talk about her chi and how she must hide her extraordinary gifts. How does she posses this chi? Where did it come from? Why is it so frowned upon? All questions and opportunities the film fails to address, says Campea.
One really exceptional thing about this movie was the relationship between Mulan and her father. Got me every time … that part of the film crushed it.
The YouTuber praises the film’s ability to further explore the father daughter relationship that the animated version did not.
Because the film was an attempt at a more realistic telling of Mulan, the musicals and fantastical elements like the dragon that was emitted from this version complemented the atmosphere of the new direction well, says Campea.
Though a great film with exceptional cinematographer that could only really be enjoyed in a theater setting, the $30 price tag without the whole theatrical experience was not worth the coin for the YouTuber.
