In Things Heard & Seen (2021), a young couple move to a small town where the wife begins to suspect a darker secret hiding in the new home. The gothic horror film is based on the novel All Things Cease to Appear by author Elizabeth Brundage. Directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the film stars Amanda Seyfried, James Norton, Natalia Dyer and Alex Neustaedter. YouTuber Steffi from her channel inn.my.humble.opinion, shares her thoughts on the horror film now streaming on Netflix.
I feel like the story had a lot of potential; it has this really nice element of mystery to it. So to me if they would have played around with the editing a bit more and told this story in a nonlinear way to play up the mystery element I think this movie really could have been saved.
The film feels more like we are watching what happens to the characters and YouTuber Steffi wishes the film gave the audience a sense of unraveling the mystery with Amanda Seyfried’s character in order to connect more emotionally with her and the story.
While watching this movie, I never understood the motivation behind why certain characters did what they did and additionally I also questioned why certain characters even existed in this movie.
Not completely convinced of all the characters and their motives, YouTuber Steffi feels all of the characters are underdeveloped, especially James Norton’s character, which she says seemed so intricate and layered. It was a missed opportunity to explore more into the complicated character, whom the audience just had to accept his actions and emotions without any backstory or context as to why he was the way he was.
The beginning of the film felt promising but the execution of the story fell short, says Steffi.
