Marianna Neal Reviews Sound of Metal

A musician’s life is thrown into chaos when he begins to lose his hearing in Sound of Metal (2020). The film is directed by Darius Marder and stars Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff and Mattieu Amalric. YouTuber Marianna Neal from the channel Impression Blend shares her thoughts on the film that made its premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and is now in select theatres and streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

All of this is captured in a brilliant performance by Riz Ahmed. His denial, his rage, his struggle, his pain, his resistance to seeing himself as he is and instead fighting for an impossible idea rejecting the help he actually needs. It is his best performance to date. He absolutely deserves recognition for it and I’m going to be really upset if he does not get nominated for a bunch of awards.

Blown away by Riz Ahmed’s performance as a man struggling, in denial, in rage and in pain, Marianna says the incredibly powerful and impactful film is a must watch. The film is not about giving up, but instead about moving forward and even addresses addiction and finding strength in community, according to the YouTuber.

One aspect of the film Marianna finds very interesting is the film's usage of sound design and how it perfectly goes hand in hand with the storytelling. She rates this film a 9/10.
