Hocus Pocus: YouTubers Discuss The Halloween Classic

Amok, amok, amok, amok, amok! It’s that spooky time of year again where we all get together to watch our favorite classic Halloween themed films. Disney’s Hocus Pocus (1993) directed by Kenny Ortega, stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the infamous Sanderson sister witches out to wreak havoc on modern day Salem, Massachusetts. The film also stars Omri Katz as Max and Thora Birch as Dani, the siblings who accidentally free the sisters from a curse. Is this film still nostalgic today? YouTubers Avaryl and Andrew from the channel MovieBitches, Alexander from the channel The Real Mr. Robinson and Channel Awesome share their retrospective reviews and first impressions of this Halloween Disney classic.

It’s not a clever film at all, but if people are really looking past the bad stuff I guess there’s a few good things you can admire. The CG mixing with the practical effects, that was pretty good. Visually it is interesting and, in all honesty, the three actresses playing the witches, they are kind of entertaining.

The YouTubers from Channel Awesome create a Hocus Pocus parody to highlight some of the major cliché aspects they feel the film portrayed saying it is a very typical 90’s film full of predictable outcomes that in the end aren’t as bad as they seem. One example they give is of the typical storyline of a teen moving to a new place and not being able to fit in.

You’re a growing teen with so many issues that can be tackled, but instead they do the one that they always do: new kid moving into a neighborhood. Like that’s somehow the only problem any kid ever has. It’s in every 90s movie, every one. Doesn’t any child anywhere else have other issues?

The YouTubers note that despite being full of crappy puns and trope-filled storylines, it’s a cheesy 90’s film that isn’t meant to be taken seriously, claiming “this movie really is the ultimate Halloween guilty pleasure.”

For YouTuber Alexander, who doesn’t have the same nostalgia for the film as many do because he is watching it for the first time as an adult, it just isn’t a movie for him. It is a trope filled cliché film that is very predictable, says the YouTuber. It is a film that if you haven’t already seen, he does not recommend it.

It’s just very paint by numbers. It’s the very definition of a live action Disney movie from the 90’s.

On the other side of the spectrum, YouTubers Avarly and Andrew enjoy watching the film every year during the Halloween holidays saying “everything freakin’ works, I love this movie. It’s so good.” The YouTubers give the most praise to the casting of the three witches played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, who they describe as an iconic trio comparing them to the Three Stooges:

They’re basically the Three Stooges … but like the best ever version … Kathy Najimy is Curly, Bette Midler is Moe, pissed off all the time, and Sarah Jessica Parker is Larry.

All of the YouTubers agree the performances of the Sanderson sisters is what made the movie so entertaining with the over the top theatrics in pretty much every single scene. It actually seemed like they were having so much fun that the same energy translates into their performance of the characters on screen, according to Alexander.

The three lead actresses are so over the top, so wild and just down right goofy, but you can tell that they are committed to their roles.

All three of the actresses nail their character performances, according to Avarly and Andrew. Everything from Bette Midlers over the top hand gestures, in which they name as another supporting character in itself, to Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker’s over acting and outrageous facial expressions, create hilarious moments throughout the film.

If you pause any frame of Kathy Najimy in this movie, she’s selling the shit out of it. Every moment is like captured, she is present and hilarious.

Avarly and Andrew agree that if the casting for the witches had been different, it probably would not have the same energy and enthusiasm because the chemistry of the actresses fit so well together creating such a fun movie. If there were ever to be a remake or sequel, recasting the witches just wouldn’t be the same, says the YouTubers.

The casting, I think that’s why this movie works … but if Bette and Kathy and Sarah Jessica Parker weren’t them, I just don’t think it would be good.
