Based on the novel Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton, The Midnight Sky (2020) follows a scientist in the Arctic who is racing to contact a crew of astronauts attempting to return home to a global disaster. Directed by George Clooney, the film stars George Clooney, Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler, Tiffany Boone, and David Oyelowo. YouTubers Nick and Joseph from the channel Fish Jelly Film Reviews, share their thoughts on the film set to release on December 23.
For a sci-fi apocalypse film, this will disappoint a lot of people because we don’t know anything about what’s going on. There isn’t really any action. There are spaceships and the galaxy but this is a drama really. But I think if I were to have read this novel, I probably would have enjoyed it.
Unimpressed with the film, Joseph and Nick find the plot to be quite anticlimactic and much of the plot point unexplained. It is not “up to snuff” says Nick, who notes that sci-fi films need to be fast paced and this one essentially feels more like a drama. The YouTubers also agree that there isn’t any feeling of connection between any of the characters especially the father and daughter storyline, which feels very forced and unnatural.
There is nothing thrilling about this film, says Nick and Joseph who rate the film a 2/5 and 1.5/5.
