In the latest film directed and written by Aaron Sorkin, The Trail of the Chicago 7 (2020) is based on the true events of civil unrest during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The film stars Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mark Rylance, Jeremy Strong, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Alex Sharp, Michael Keaton and Frank Langella. The film was released in theaters on September 25 and will be set to release on Netflix streaming on October 16. YouTuber Sean O’Connell, the managing director at the channel CinemaBlend, shares his review on the Aaron Sorkin courtroom drama.
It’s kind of amazing again watching Aaron Sorkin, the screenwriter, just connect the dots between things that happened in our past to things that are going on right now and essentially make the argument that yes these things are cyclical. Some of the things that we are struggling with now as a nation plagued us even back then and kind of cynically makes the note that we’re probably going to be dealing with it for years to come.
Praising the film as one of the best he’s seen all year, the YouTuber is enthralled by how the director is able to present the events in the story from the past and create a parallel to events that are currently happening in society today. This film resonates so much with the current culture and depicts the historic events in a way that isn’t too “heavy-handed or preachy”, but in an enlightening and entertaining way, according to O’Connell.
The cast performance is probably one of the best aspects of the film aside from the excellent screenwriting, says the YouTuber. Though not loaded with Hollywood heavy hitters, the ensemble gives stellar performances with everyone at their A game.
The stand out of the ensemble has to be Yahya Abdul-Mateen II … the character he plays, Bobby Seale is a tragic and really significant part of the court case … Yahya Abdul Mateen leans into the performance and his portrayal of Bobby Seale is as memorable as you’re going get, he makes the most his time with Sorkin and I think it’s going to be the one that stands out from the ensemble.”
Excited for the film’s release on Netflix streaming, O’Connell gives The Trail of the Chicago 7 a 5/5 rating.
