YouTubers Christy Lemire, Matt Atchity and Alonso Duralde from the channel Breakfast All Day Podcast, share their views on the film.
I’m kind of shocked that this day in age we are telling a story about a Civil War vet that’s dealing with the aftermath and it touches so little on the fact that he was a confederate captain and fought on the confederate side. And we see this lynching, we see that aftermath of a lynching early on, but this movie hardly deals with the idea of slavery and these guys fought for that.
Despite being well aware that the film is not about the events of the Civil War and the aftermath of slavery, YouTuber Matt Atchity, feels the movie could have touched a little more on that aspect of the characters history and background. He feels in our current climate, films, Hollywood and the media should do more to address these problematic social issues of our history.
YouTuber Christy Lemire, finds the film to be “slow to a fault” and feels the director is trying to do something so different and outside of his normal scope of work that it becomes the extreme opposite and ends up feeling “really sluggish and dull.”
On the opposite spectrum, YouTuber Alonso Duralde does agree the film is a slow-paced movie, but at the same time was never bored throughout the entire story. Their collective rating for the film is a 6.8/10 with Duralde being the only YouTuber who enjoys the film.
