Now streaming on Disney+, Godmothered (2020) follows a fairy godmother in training out to prove that no matter where in life you are, people still need the magic of a fairy godmother. Directed by Sharon Maguire, the film stars Jillian Bell, Isla Fisher, June Squibb, Jane Curtain, and Santiago Cabrera. YouTuber Brandon from the channel BrandoCritic, shares his thoughts on the latest Disney fantasy film.
My biggest issue with this movie is that while sure you know exactly what this movie is going to be, it’s a very cookie cutter plot, fairy godmother coming into our world you know exactly how this movie is going to end, but to me that’s not really a big problem if they make it funny, if they make it interesting, if they make it unique … the biggest problem with that is that the humor especially the fish out of water humor, it felt very very forced.
Definitely a film with a message we have seen before, says Brandon who references another Disney movie Enchanted (2007), as being strikingly familiar to this film. The YouTuber says the film isn’t terrible but the biggest and only standout is from the performance of Jillian Bell as the inexperienced fairy godmother, who only produces a few laughable moments.
Though it does send the positive message to find your happily ever after in loving your friends, family and yourself, it isn’t unique and is a message Disney has explored in other similar films.
