Bridgerton: A Period Romance with a Modern Twist

Based on the novels of the same name by author Julia Quinn, Bridgerton (2020) is Netflix’s newest series following the lives of the eight Bridgerton siblings as they attempt to find love during Regency era England. Created by Chris Van Dusen, the series stars Rege-Jean Page, Phoebe Dynevor, Jonathan Bailey, Luke Newton, Claudia Jessie, Nicola Coughlan and Julie Andrews, just to name a few. YouTuber Austin Burke shares his thoughts on the first season of the romance series.

There are those of us who appreciate a good romantic tale, but we like for there to be a nice little twist or certain things that make the relationship feel real. And even though the show as a whole has the modern twist … you also have this relationship that you can relate so much to that I absolutely love.

Not usually a genre that he gravitates towards, the YouTuber is delighted to see that though the series is more of a period romance drama, the creators found clever ways to sprinkle in modern aspects to make the stories more relatable to a modern audience. Anywhere from the familiar pop music playing in the background to more modern-day conversations and ideas had by the characters as they interact with each other.

The YouTuber also notices that not only do the main characters have great character development and character arcs, but almost all the side characters do as well. The two main characters Simon and Daphne exhort so much charm and are so likeable, he immediately becomes invested in their storyline. A great performance by both actors, according to Burke, who says the series is a smart and engaging win for the romance genre.
