Abstract Framework Reviews Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado

Sobre todo, mucho, mucho, amor! In the Netflix documentary Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado (2020), the film highlights the life and career of Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado. Directed by Cristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch, the film premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and takes an inside look into the life of the Latin American icon. YouTuber Christian Alvarado from the channel Abstract Framework, shares his thoughts on the biopic as he remembers the legend.

It’s unfortunate that that was the case he maybe couldn’t really express himself 100% in the fear of losing his career. What he was doing at the time was really groundbreaking and he was one of the most popular people in Puerto Rican culture or Latin culture for what he looked like, how he expressed himself and the message he was sending to audiences all over the world.

Having grown up watching the astrologer on TV as a child, Alvarado describes Walter Mercado as a “mythical legend, someone that was very secretive”, broke boundaries with his non-gender conforming appearance and always had a positive energy. He notes the documentary does a fascinating job in giving an insight into Mercado’s background as an actor and dancer and even into his family life.

The YouTuber also finds it shocking to see how the icon’s own manager and some of the other people he surrounded himself with played a part in the slow demise of his career. Such an interesting story to an iconic historical figure in the Latin community, says Alvarado.

The documentary is now streaming on Netflix.
